Learn chess openings with guided practice
Understand the move with a FIDE Master’s explanation. Play it yourself, test your memory, then revisit the positions from your own games.
Try a line freeEnglish, French and Russian

Choose one opening
Pick a repertoire for White or Black. Start with a short line in the Vienna Gambit, London System or Caro-Kann instead of learning every reply at once.
Learn the idea, then play the move
Study mode explains the position and offers hints when you need them. You make your side’s moves while the opponent follows the lesson.
Recall the line in practice
Switch to practice and try the moves without the study hints. Revisit a line when you hesitate, then test yourself again.
Bring a plan to your next game

Make your first moves count.
One line. A master’s explanation. Your turn to play.

Bring your repertoire to life.
Rehearse your lines, then use your own games to choose what needs another look.

Save your thinking for later.
Still pondering move five? Practise recalling your opening before the clock starts.
See the idea. Play with a plan.
Draw the connections. Revisit your games. Know what to work on next.
Make the threats visible
Draw attack and defence arrows on the web board. Counters add up the connections you mark.
Find your recurring detours
Import Lichess or Chess.com games. See where you leave your repertoire and pick a line to revisit.
Bring your games to the lesson
At matching Study positions, see how often you departed in your imported games. Practise the move with that history in view.

Does leaving an opening line mean I made a bad move?
A departure means your move differs from Theoria’s repertoire; it may still be playable. The game-history feedback helps you recognise recurring positions and practise the line you chose to learn.
Can I try Theoria without signing up?
Yes. The homepage has playable opening samples, practice drills and quizzes. Create a free account when you want to track your learning.
Which languages are available?
Theoria’s interface and opening lessons are available in English, French and Russian.
Does the trainer play any move I choose?
Training follows a selected opening line. If you play a different move, you can retry or use a hint. This keeps the session focused on learning that repertoire.
Your opening, explained by a master.
FIDE Master and the chess educator behind MaxounChess, Max prepares Theoria’s opening lessons to help you understand the plan and make your next move with purpose.
